JORGE ANTONIO GOMEZ
On June 1, 2020, Jorge Antonio Gomez (25yo) was fatally shot by Las Vegas Metro Police officers outside the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse in downtown Las Vegas during protests sparked by the murder of George Floyd. Over the years since, his family, advocates, and attorneys have sought accountability, transparency, and justice for his wrongful death.
Background & Key Facts:
At age 25, Jorge Gomez was openly carrying a long gun and a holstered handgun — a practice permitted under Nevada’s open carry laws, during a downtown protest sparked by the murder of George Floyd. Multiple videos depict a cascade of confusion before four police officers shot and killed Jorge Antonio Gomez with 19 shots in less than three seconds on the infamous Las Vegas Blvd. in downtown Las Vegas.
In conflicting statements and investigative documents, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (lvmpd), state that Gomez allegedly raised his rifle towards police, prompting them to open fire, even though surveillance video later released shows it did not happen. There is no evidence that Jorge ever raised a gun, and yet he was met with deadly force.
Steve Wolfson, the Clark County District Attorney, declined to file criminal charges against the four officers involved, concluding their actions were “reasonable and/or legally justified.”
In a public fact-finding review, the lead investigator for LVMPD, Jason Leavitt, contradicted many parts of the official accounts — including the fact that non-lethal rounds were fired at Gomez which caused him to retreat from harm.
None of the four officers who opened fire were equipped with body cameras at the time of the shooting.
The official report indicates Gomez sustained gunshot wounds across multiple parts of his body: head, abdomen, back, side, hand, thigh, hip.
Gomez’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit naming LVMPD, Sgt. Ryan Fryman and officers Dan Emerton, Vernon Ferguson and Andrew Locherthe - the officers involved. The wrongful death trial is set to begin on October 20, 2025.
